The European Press Prize is an institution founded in 2012 by representatives of seven independent esteemed media-owning foundations in Europe, to help counter the effects of a transforming, pressured market and declining press freedom, which has led to an environment in which independent quality journalism has become increasingly difficult to maintain. The European Press Prize's aim is to salute and encourage journalism of the highest quality wherever it can be found on the European continent, because a healthy, well-informed public debate lead by professional journalists is crucial for democracy and the rule of law – the basis of open, just societies.
