Conclusions of international fact-finding mission: Taking the pulse of press freedom in Greece

Fresh off the back of a major international press freedom mission to Athens, this panel of European media freedom experts take stock of the deteriorating state of independent journalism and press freedom in Greece. The panel will share their conclusions and reflections after finishing their three-day fact-finding and advocacy mission in the capital, during which they met with leading journalists, editors, state authorities and government officials, as well as the government’s Task Force for media. Featuring speakers from Free Press Unlimited (FPU), the International Press Institute (IPI), the Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa (OBCT) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the panel will take a deep dive into the biggest challenges facing Greek media landscape, ranging from journalists’ safety and spyware to SLAPPs and media capture, as well as what the international perspective on what needs to be done to address them.
